Envelope budgeting with a buffer

Drachma guide · October 2026

Envelope budgeting is one of the oldest budgeting methods there is. You split your spending money into envelopes, one per category, and when an envelope is empty, you stop spending in that category until next month. It works because it makes limits visible. It fails for one reason: real life doesn't fit neatly into envelopes.

How the envelope method works

  1. Decide how much you'll spend this month after bills and savings.
  2. Split that amount into envelopes for the categories you spend on most.
  3. Pay for things from the matching envelope.
  4. When an envelope runs out, either stop, or move money over from another envelope on purpose.

Why strict envelopes break

A friend's birthday dinner, a vet bill, a week of higher prices. One surprise and an envelope is overspent by the 12th. It feels like failure, and failure is the moment most people quit budgeting. The method didn't fail; it just had no room for the unexpected.

The fix: keep a buffer

Don't put every coin in an envelope. Leave part of your monthly plan unallocated as a buffer. When an envelope runs over, cover it from the buffer and carry on. At the end of the month, whatever is left in the buffer goes toward a goal. Overspending becomes a decision you make, not a rule you broke.

An example plan

EnvelopeMonthly amount
Groceries$450
Eating out$210
Transport$150
Personal$140
Buffer$250
Monthly plan$1,200

If eating out runs $40 over, the buffer drops to $210 and nothing else changes. If the month goes smoothly, $250 heads to your emergency fund.
